I Am With You

My kids are afraid of the dark. Aren't all kids? I'm afraid of the dark sometimes!

They refuse to go upstairs if there's no light on. Sometimes, if a sister is there, they will hold hands and attempt it.

But the best? Mommy or Daddy. If I am there, carrying them, or holding their hand, their fears are erased. They cling to me and all is okay with the world.

We lost our power a few weeks ago. As I was carrying Jonas up the pitch black stairs, I was thinking about this. About how different a scary experience is when there is a fearless (ha!) grown-up carrying you through it.

But the point is not that I am fearless, but that my child unconditionally trusts me. They know that I am bigger and stronger, and they believe that I am capable of protecting them from whatever perceived monsters lurk around the dark corners.

And isn't this the same promise God makes to us, His children?

"So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." Isaiah 41:10

How often we forget that He is there. Not around the corner. Not busy up in the sky somewhere. But right there. "I am with you."

Holding us. Carrying us. Walking beside us. Though the path seems dark and lonely at times, He is there. Completely trustworthy. Totally fearless. Even when we don't believe it. Can't trust Him. He's still there.

"I am with you."

Just as we would never leave our own children to fend for themselves at the bottom of a dark stairway. Why do we think God is any different? The same fierce love and desire to protect that's inside of us is inside of our God. Just multiply it times a thousand.

"I am with you."

Has been my life's verse since 5th grade when my teacher was killed in a car accident.
